The Kingdom of Avenrose

The bunting went up before the sun did.

Granny Osla watched it happen from the good chair at the head of the family's flagship stall, which was the chair she'd sat in for twenty years and would sit in for twenty more if her knees kept their side of the bargain. Down the length of Coppergilt Row the awnings opened one after another, poppy-red and cream, and boys went up ladders with ribbon in their teeth, and somebody's apprentice dropped a whole crate of candied plums and was cursed with real joy by three stalls at once. Nobody curses like a market on festival eve. It's a kind of singing.

Nine days to the four-hundredth Rising of Avenrose. The Kingdom of Avenrose meant to be ready a week early, in the manner of a city that could afford to be — and that, Osla thought, was still the wonder of it. The affording.

She'd kept this corner the best part of her life. Her mother had sold berries off a barrow with one bad wheel, and her father had mended that wheel every night of his life. Now the family name sat in gold leaf above five stalls and a warehouse by the river, her daughter ran the accounts the way an admiral runs a fleet, and pilgrims from six kingdoms came up the Row of a morning with money in their fists and wonder on their faces, buying ribbon, buying sweets, buying the little licensed miniatures of the queen with the Likeness Guild's closed-eye mark in the corner, so you knew her face was her face.

The queen's face was good business. It had been good business for a hundred years.

The great-grandchildren found her mid-morning, all four at once, the way weather finds a ship. The eldest boy was ten and newly serious; the twins were eight and never serious; the smallest was five and made of questions.

"Granny," the smallest said, climbing her like furniture. "The berry day. Tell the berry day."

"You've had the berry day a hundred times."

"Then it's practiced," said one of the twins.

There was no arguing with that, and she didn't intend to try. She settled the smallest into the crook of her arm, took one breath of festival air — sugar, rope, horses, somebody's bread — and laid the story out on the counter of herself the way her mother had laid out fruit. Face up. Best side showing.

"I was a girl smaller than you are now," she said, "minding my mother's barrow, there where the fountain is. And up the Row one morning comes a woman in a plain grey cloak, hood up, nothing to her at all. No rings. No guards that we could see. She stops at the barrow and she picks over the berries like she's got all the time in creation, and my mother — your great-great-granny, girls — says to her, 'Fresh this morning, mistress,' because that's what you say."

"And the woman says—" the twins started.

"Who's telling it?" The twins subsided. "The woman says, 'I'll take the half-measure.' And she weighs it in her hand like any wife with a supper to plan. And she pays."

"She overpaid," all four of them said at once, with enormous satisfaction.

"She overpaid," Osla agreed. "Too much, in kind as good as any noble's, and she wouldn't take the difference back. Bought her berries like a common wife, thanked my mother for them, and went off down the Row eating them out of the paper, if you please. Like anybody. And it wasn't till she was gone past the fountain that old Wickers the tinker grabbed my mother's arm with his mouth hanging open like a dropped latch, and the whisper went stall to stall to stall, and my mother sat down on a crate and didn't get up for an hour."

The smallest, who knew the answer, whispered it anyway. "It was the queen."

"It was the queen."

"Was she sad?" the eldest boy asked. That was a new question. He was at the age where stories grow doors.

"She was happy," Osla said. "That's what made it a story, love. Happy as a bride at a fair — the whole Row swore to it after, though you'll notice nobody swore to seeing her face under that hood, and every year the tale gains a little lace at the hem. My mother kept one piece of that kind folded in a kerchief till the day she died. Wouldn't bank it. Said some money isn't money."

"And she never came back," the boy said.

"Not to our barrow." Osla looked down the Row, past the ribbon and the ladders, toward the palace hill. "She hasn't bought her own berries in a long while, I'd say."

The children were too young to remember the dark years, and their mothers only barely — the years after King Consort Pariston Haffer died, when the palace kept its windows unlit and the whole city learned to talk soft, as you do in a house where somebody sleeps badly. You didn't explain a thing like that to children on a festival morning. It was over. It had been over a long while — the gates open, the court loud, the queen out on her walkabouts charming the paint off the shutters. But a winter that hard leaves a memory in the knees, and Osla's knees were old enough to keep it.

Across the way, at the corner of the Row, the Church of the Wakeful Crown kept its shrine: a stone niche, a brass rail polished bright by hands, and a candle that was never allowed to go out. A young brother in grey came at dawn and dusk to feed it fresh vigil-wax (good wax, too; Osla knew wax, and the Church did not skimp), and pilgrims queued at the rail all day to light their own small flames off the big one. She keeps the watch, so the realm may sleep. That was the doctrine. Osla paid her tithe every quarter-day, on time and in full, and rolled her eyes at the rest of it in the privacy of her own skull. You could hold with the queen without holding with all that. The queen bought berries. Gods don't buy berries. There the argument rested, as far as Osla was concerned, and no brother in grey had yet improved on it.

Up the hill at the Gilded Ewe they kept a wager-book so old it had laws of its own, and the standing page that season asked when Her Majesty would keep spring again. Osla had money down on sooner than you think. She hadn't told her daughter. Her daughter thought the wager-book was beneath them now. Her daughter had never sold berries off a barrow.

When the plums were swept and the noon rush was fed, she rose from the good chair, took the smallest by the hand, and said, "Feet. All of you. We're going to see your street."

"Our street's here," said a twin.

"Your street," Osla said, "is also somewhere finer. Come and see."

The Noble District had no nobles left to speak of — they'd scattered generations back, to apartments under the palace hill and towers out in the countryside — but names stick to districts the way pitch sticks to boots, and the pilgrims liked saying it. What the district had now was the Royal Library of Avenrose, new that spring for the Rising, its stone still quarry-pale, its doors propped wide to anyone with feet. A stonemason's family from Zauria queued ahead of them. A Primrascian grandmother shepherded six children through behind. The whole realm, Osla thought, was coming to Avenrose to become Avenrose, and the city just kept setting out more chairs.

Inside, under a ceiling you could have flown a kite in, the kingdom hung on the wall: the great sector-map, tall as three men, every district inked and named, the river a silver ribbon, the countryside stitched with roads. The children found their own street with their fingers and were unreasonably proud of it, as if they'd drawn it there themselves.

They walked the long hall slowly, Osla reading out the plaques her mother could never have read. The wars and the peaces. The First Sovereignty. The decrees, bound in black, their wax seals displayed under glass. A wing for King Consort Pariston Haffer, the varnish still sweet, where a librarian was gently explaining to a red-eyed pilgrim woman that no, madam, the flowers went at the palace garden gate, not here. And at the hall's end, on a shelf built proud of the wall, the royal lines: the line of King Cordillion Avenrose bound in deep red, and beside it, bound plainer, the queen's own — QUEEN COSIMA ODEPIN stamped down the spine, the maiden name sitting there in public type, plain as a price.

At her own insistence, the librarians said, if you asked. She'd sent the facts down from the palace herself — names, years, corrections in her own hand.

Osla approved with her whole ledger-keeping soul. She'd spent a lifetime watching the Row polish the berry tale a little shinier every season, and that was one morning and a half-measure of fruit. Let a whole life go through that mill and see what comes out the far end. Hearsay compounds, like bad interest. The queen, it seemed, had decided the kingdom should have the sums in ink.

"Is she in here?" the smallest asked, patting the shelf.

"Her whole line, love."

"Does she come and read it?"

"She doesn't need to," the eldest boy said, scornful. "She was there."

Which was the truest thing said in the Kingdom of Avenrose that day, and Osla let it stand.

It was on the steps going out, in the long gold light, that the boy finally got to the thing he'd been carrying since morning. She'd watched it sit in him. Ten-year-olds carry a question the way they carry a frog in a pocket: badly.

"Granny." Very casual. "The talk on the Row. About the queen's fated one. That it could be anybody. A roof-mender. A nobody." A breath. "Is it true?"

The twins went still. Even the smallest went still, in the way of small children who feel the weather of a moment before they understand it.

And Osla — who had seen a hooded woman weigh berries in her bare hand like any wife in the world, who had watched from knee-height on the one morning the whole realm agreed the impossible had walked up her own Row and gone away happy — Osla laughed. It came up out of her warm as bread.

She was still laughing when she noticed she hadn't said no.

She let that stand too.

They came back along the Row as the lamps were being lit. Up in the towers the bell-ringers were rehearsing for the Rising, little runs of sound, started and stopped, like a girl trying on ribbons. The evening crowd was thick and glad and slow.

The outriders came first. You felt them before you saw them — the crowd's noise changing note, a pressure running up the street ahead of hooves. Then the horses, matched and gleaming. Then the carriage: dark lacquer and gold, the royal arms on the door, moving at an easy festival walk.

The Row rose like a field of birds. Hats off, hands up, children hoisted onto shoulders; the ribbon-seller shouting herself hoarse; and at the shrine rail the pilgrims turned as one, and two of them went straight down to their knees on the cobbles. Osla stood — knees and all — because you stood. Because a lifetime in this city, and the sight of that carriage still did what it had always done, and she had never settled whether that was love or habit, and had stopped expecting to.

The window glass was dark. But as the carriage drew level with the Row, a hand came to rest against the inside of the pane — pale, ringless, still. It stayed there the whole length of the stalls, as if the dark behind it were taking in the awnings and the ribbon and the fruit set out face-up and best-side-showing, all the way down.

Then the carriage was past, and the hand was gone, and the Row poured back in behind it like water behind a keel.

"Did she see us?" the smallest demanded from her hip. "Granny. Did she see us?"

"She saw the whole Row, love."

"But did she see us?"

Osla settled the child higher and did not answer that twice. At the corner, the shrine's candle guttered once in the wind of the carriage's passing.

Then it steadied, and burned on.
